These speeds are excellent for a VPN at this price point. On European servers, Surfshark barely affects your connection. Transatlantic speeds are strong enough for 4K streaming and large downloads. Only on very long-distance connections to Asia does the speed loss become significant, and even then, 270 Mbps is more than adequate for virtually any consumer use case.

Privacy and Security
No-Logs Policy
Surfshark's no-logs policy was independently audited by Deloitte in 2023. The audit confirmed that Surfshark does not store connection logs, IP addresses, browsing history, session information, or bandwidth data. This puts Surfshark in the same trust tier as NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
Jurisdiction
Surfshark is incorporated in the Netherlands, which is part of the Nine Eyes intelligence alliance. This is the most common criticism levelled at Surfshark. However, the Netherlands does not currently require VPN providers to retain user data, and Surfshark's audited no-logs policy means there is nothing to hand over regardless. The practical risk is low, but privacy absolutists may prefer a provider based in a non-alliance jurisdiction.
In early 2025, Surfshark clarified that their parent company Cyberspace BV operates the infrastructure, and they have legal mechanisms to challenge any data requests. Combined with the no-logs audit, we consider this an acceptable risk for the vast majority of users.
Encryption and Protocols
Surfshark uses AES-256-GCM encryption with WireGuard and AES-256-CBC with OpenVPN. Both are industry standard and unbreakable with current technology. WireGuard is the default and recommended protocol — it is faster and more efficient than OpenVPN while maintaining equivalent security.
Surfshark also supports IKEv2/IPSec on iOS and macOS, which provides stable performance on mobile networks that frequently switch between Wi-Fi and cellular.
Kill Switch
We tested the kill switch extensively by simulating VPN connection drops during active browsing, streaming, and torrenting. The kill switch activated reliably every time, blocking all internet traffic within approximately 250 milliseconds. No IP leaks detected in any of our 20+ tests.
The kill switch is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. It is not enabled by default — you must activate it in settings, which we recommend doing immediately after installation.
DNS and WebRTC Leaks

The key limitation is that CleanWeb only works while the VPN is connected. NordVPN's Threat Protection Pro works independently of the VPN connection. Rotating IP
Surfshark's Rotating IP feature automatically changes your outgoing IP address every few minutes without disconnecting the VPN or interrupting your browsing session. This makes it harder for websites to build a persistent profile based on your IP. It is an unusual feature that most competitors do not offer.
MultiHop
MultiHop routes your traffic through two VPN servers in different countries. This provides an extra layer of encryption and makes traffic analysis more difficult. Similar to NordVPN's Double VPN, but Surfshark lets you choose both entry and exit countries, giving you more control over your route.

Surfshark's desktop apps are clean, modern, and easy to navigate. The main screen shows a quick-connect button and a searchable list of server locations. Favourite servers can be pinned for quick access. Settings are well organised and not buried in submenus.
