We exposed NordVPN, Bitdefender, and Malwarebytes to identical threat scenarios on the same hardware. Here is what happened.
Test Environment
- Hardware: Dell XPS 15, Windows 11 Pro, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
- Malware samples: 500 known samples from AV-TEST library, 50 simulated zero-day behaviours
- Ransomware simulation: custom script mimicking file encryption behaviour
- Phishing: 30 documented phishing URLs from PhishTank
- Test duration: 30 days per product

Performance Impact
We measured CPU usage during scans and background operations, and file transfer speeds with each product active.
CPU impact during full scan:

- Bitdefender: 31% average CPU
- Norton: 38% average CPU
- Bitdefender: 4% slower than baseline
- Malwarebytes: 6% slower than baseline
- Norton: 11% slower than baseline
False Positives
False positives — legitimate software flagged as threats — are a real usability problem. Over 30 days:
- Bitdefender: 2 false positives (both quickly resolved with exclusions)
- Malwarebytes: 3 false positives
- Norton: 6 false positives (flagged two popular developer tools)
